Moving: Tips on Packing

What are your antiques & collectibles worth?

Our appraisers rely on education, professional training, or experience to determine the value of an item. Here are the criteria they use in determining value.

Age * Condition * Quality
Rarity * Historical significance
Provenance: who made or owned it
Size * Subject matter * Fashion or taste

When you have a valuable piece, the more information you have to show an appraiser, the more accurate the determination of value can be.
Writing down the history of a piece can add value to it, especially if it's been in the family a long time. Keep a journal, take photos, keep receipts, save letters, snapshots, and newspaper clips.
Please do not remove or wash any paper labels sometimes found on the underside of a piece. These labels usually give valuable information as to where the piece was made, or who made it.

Moving: Tips on Packing

Here are some helpful "tricks of the trade" that Karen Martin uses.

  • It's more efficient to use a large folding table to sort and pack on; it also protects your back from strain.

  • Label boxes on opposite sides with a thick black marker.

  • Mark room and items, such as "Dining Room / Crystal" on both sides of boxes.

  • Mark FRAGILE where appropriate.

  • Pack china plates between paper plates.

  • Tie lamp cords neatly with rubber bands.

  • Use contractor trash bags 3 ml thick for pillows, spreads & bulky items.

  • Purchase a roll of bubble wrap for breakables such as mirrors, pictures, or to protect delicate surfaces.

  • Foam rubber can also be used to cushion valuables.

  • Save worn blankets & towels for packing lamp bases & large picture frames.

  • Purchase wardrobe boxes from Taylor Rental (less expensive) or rent from your mover.

  • Disassemble & label cable connections for computers, VCR's, DVD's, etc. A schematic drawing can help with easy reassembly. Box all manuals together & label.

Moving Day!

Know where you want your furniture placed! It is helpful to work out the floor plan ahead of time. With local moves, it is also helpful to set up the kitchen and bathroom in advance of the move.

Pack in your car:

  • Linens for making your bed

  • Medicines

  • Jewelry

  • Irreplaceable family photos

  • Tools for assembly

  • Liquor

  • Small boxes with important personal papers, including medical & family history

  • Any fragile special items

  • Plants
